Peekaboo Beans: Family First

Can you imagine working for a company that believes family matters have no business in the workplace?  I can’t. Today the CBC writes “Employers told they must accommodate staff’s child-care requests.”  The article talks of a new landmark federal court decision that states workplaces are obliged to accommodate reasonable childcare-related requests from their employee. It’s a step in the right direction for many employers.

But not for Peekaboo Beans; we are so far ahead of the race you can’t even see us. We are a company that puts families first. A company that doesn’t require you to choose your work over your family. If your kids are sick, you stay home with them. If your kids have a school recital  you go – no questions asked. If your kids have a PD and you need to get a few things done, you bring them to work.

One step at a time, we are changing the way the work force prioritizes families. I’m so proud to be a part of such a progressive company, and one that has its priorities in line.

Peekaboo Beans: Catch the entrepreneurial bug

My grandparents were both entrepreneurs. They owned two high-end women’s clothing boutiques in Toronto, and my grandmother designed and fabricated the clothing in the basement workshop. It was called Boutique D’Olivier, after my grandfather. I remember as a child going to visit her at the store. She would give me bags of fabric scraps that I would turn into crafts when I got home.

I wonder sometimes if this is where my entrepreneurial bug came from. I absolutely love being one. The pot is even more sweetened by the fact that my business is as a Peekaboo Beans Stylist. I love the clothing, and being able to market and promote them in creative ways. I love our company philosophy about putting families first and changing the opportunities for mothers to work in an environment that also supports their first role as mom. I love the enthusiasm from my team and my colleagues at our Playground (head office), and how much we support each other in growing our businesses!

Three years ago my journey into the entrepreneurial world began when my friend Lara and I built an online children’s clothing boutique. We spent hours building our brand, choosing the inventory we would carry, and marketing it online. It was such a valuable learning experience for me, I’m still using the skills I learned as I run my Stylist business.

While running our shop, we often ran into other moms  thinking about starting up a biz, but feeling daunted and intimiated by the whole process. What I love about being able to share the Peekaboo Beans business with other moms is that essentially all the hard work is done for them! When you start your business as a Stylist, you are becoming a team member of an already established busines.  The business plan is in place, all that you need to get yourself going is a few business supplies, a positive attitude and a goal to work toward.

Wherever this journey as a Stylist is taking me, I am completely hooked and loving it. I experience so many moments of joy as I am learning to be a better leader, a more effective business owner, and a passionate entrepreneur. I want nothing more than to share this passion and the entrepreneurial bug with others!

The best job in the world

Our Director of Play and Founder Traci Costa recently shared this message in our monthly Beans Bulletin. It was a message I can so relate to, as I’ve been there – in a job that I was miserable in for far too long. I’m so fortunate to now be doing something that I love! Owning my own business as a Play Stylist brings me so much joy. Read Traci’s message about we can have it all;  a job we love, a family too, and the best working environment in the world :

message from traci“How many of you had dreaded going to a job, have cringed when the alarm goes off, felt sad to miss out on an important event in your Beans lives. Or maybe you have a job that you love, but want something to channel your inner entrepreneur, a creative or social outlet, to be part of your community, to make something yours.

At some point, we have all been there. Paid our dues, put in our time for someone else, learned our lessons, worked hard, had a boss that didn’t treat people right. I have been there. It is one of the reasons I am so passionate about creating a working opportunity for women, and particularly for mothers. Why can’t work be fun, why can’t we make a difference, why can’t we embrace the people, create goals, achieve them in business and personally. Why can’t we be a stand for the best work environments for mothers, at the Playground or by creating self employment opportunities for women and mothers everywhere.

So I say it again, find what you do, and it will never feel like a day of work ever……create your own destiny, be your own boss, join a family that cares. Peekaboo Beans cares. I care.

So here I am today, asking you to help make a difference in the world, with me. Together. Let’s be the change. Lets:

  • Be a reminder everyday to give children space, time and freedom to find themselves, to find their strengths, weaknesses, and to fall down and get back up. Play is their work. Play is what children do when we stop telling them what to do, where to be, or who to be with.
  • Be a stand for a quality product – by choosing a Company that respects our customer’s money and values that they want to spend their hard earned dollars on our product. A Company that thinks about the way children move, jump, bend, run, skip, and play, but also fosters independence.  A Company that believes in children and thinks about what is best for them.  A Company that puts family first.  A product that is quality and not consumable.  Produced with love and care.
  • Be a stand for creating the best working environments that fosters people, values, and gives back and is socially responsible.

We can have all this, we can do all this. All we have to do is share our story, share our passion. All we have to do is believe. But we have to do this together. One vine. Standing together through thick and thin. I will continue to spread the joy, to be a stand for our product and be a stand for my Beans and yours.

In love and play,

5 reasons why I love being a Peekaboo Beans Play Stylist

I have been running my own business as Peekaboo Beans Stylist for a little over a year now, and I am really enjoying it. But what is being a Stylist REALLY like? Did you know…

  • You can start your own Stylist business for as little as $199, and receive samples, catalogs and training tools to get you started.
  • You will earn up to 25% in commission on your own personal sales each month, plus 5% commission on your downvine’s sales.
  • Most stylists start out by aiming for one $400 Soiree a month to meet the 6 month target. Many meet the target by their first or second month, and can do as many or as few Soirees within their schedule.
  • We have a supportive, non-competitive online community where Stylists can share ideas, resources and tips for what works in the business.
  • Many customers return season after season and become VIPBs – this is a product that sells itself!
  • Peekaboo Beans is gaining momentum across the country. You could be the first Stylist in your area!

Becoming a Peekaboo Beans Play Stylist

Not many people know the story behind Peekaboo Beans and how it got started. It was started in 2006 by Traci Costa; the name the name came from a game that Traci played with her daughter Cailin to encourage healthy eating – playing “peek-a-boo” with edamame beans. With her sister-in-law and one fashion intern by her side, Traci began designing concepts for a new line of clothing made for kids and their parents.

Traci was blessed with another little girl Colbie, born in 2008. Now with her girls, ages 3 and 8, she is a strong proponent of “free play” because of the benefits Traci feels it has on children’s development. In 2010, Traci was recognized as one of Business In Vancouver’s Forty under 40! Traci and her team continue to evolve and to expand the Peekaboo Beans collections, while maintaining their passion for providing ingredients for a playful life. They hope that you love the clothes as much as they do. They are always open to new design ideas, concepts, thoughts and invite you to join the Peekaboo Beans Family.
